This Beko machine wasn't starting cycles. It was diagnosed as a door lock fault, the customer has to close the door in a particular way to make it work and it's finally failed.

This customer called up to say the door on their Beko washing machine was stuck. They also asked us to clear out the filter as they couldn't open it.

All that was needed was a replacement handle, the ones on these Beko's are made out of the cheapest plastic, it's one of our most common call outs.

Handle replaced, fridge magnet and coins removed from the filter. The machine is back up and running. The initial call out was on Friday, parts delivered Saturday and fitted Monday. We always aim to turn around jobs as quickly as possible.

This heatwave isn't just affecting us and our furry friends. Some of your home appliances will be struggling as well.

If your fridge is struggling it's because it's working extra hard. They require the ambient temperature to be below 30°c to work effectively. If you can, pull it away from the wall to improve airflow. Make sure all the vents are clear and fluff free.

Heat pump dryers utilize the same principles as your fridges. They require an ambient temperature of between 10-30°c. Temperature outside this range means they can't condense effectively. If you need to use your dryer put it into the coolest room in your house or hang the washing outside.

Our current head of HR has been searching the house for somewhere cool. Frozen tuna ice cubes have been formally requested.

This week's cautionary tale of what did we pull out a washing machine it's the hair pin, a repeat offender. These things can do real damage to the machine if they end up in the wash.

This Candy washer dryer had one stuck in the drain pump. They can also cause damage to hoses leading to leaks.

This top of the range Siemens heat pump dryer was constantly flashing the water tray alarm even though it was empty.

Some soggy dog hair and lint sitting between the two metal contacts will do that. This makes the machine think the base is constantly full of water setting the alarm off and preventing it from drying.

This Sharp washing machine was a great/terrible example of excess detergent use.

Excess detergent and fabric conditioner use leads to.
Damaged/mouldy seals
Premature failure of drum components
Blocks the drains
Major cause of bad smells
Greasy marks on clothes
Poor wash results

To remedy this

Use half to two thirds of the manufacturers recommend dose - I have an 8kg machine and use 40-70g of powder per cycle, less if it's just a few bits or a short cycle.

Use less fabric softener or non at all. I very rarely use it, never on normal clothes. Excess fabric softener causes the black slime in the detergent drawer and around the seal.

Avoid short cycles wherever possible. Powder and pods won't fully dissolve on a 30 minute cold cycle. The quick cycle is for when you run out of clean pants and need some in a hurry.

Depending on use run a monthly clean cycle with a proper washing machine cleaner. Get a 3in1 cleaner, descaler and degreaser. Run it on a hot, long cycle or the drum clean setting if your machine has one.

This customer reported an E08 error on their Hoover washing washing machine. This normally means the motor brushes have worn. In this case one was totally worn out and the other partially. Both brushes replaced and the machine is back up and running.

January was our busiest month so far. After completing our first year and building a company from scratch it's great to see the hard work beginning to pay off. One of our typical days

Today has been a day of fixing mainly Germanic brands with a smattering of Italian flair thrown in for good measure.

Quick meeting with the head of HR before I head out. She says we've been busy in January but the dreamies don't buy themselves.

1st job - Bosch with a faulty heater. No amount of German engineering can deal with Bristol's violently hard water

2nd - Miele dishwasher with a sticky pump. Cleaned out and gave the customer some cleaner to run through.

3rd - Motor change on a Candy washer dryer.

4th - Miele washing machine in need of some replacement motor brushes. This machine has been handed down through the family and this is the only work it's ever needed.

5th - Oven element on a Neff double oven.

6th and final job - Neff dishwasher drain hose blocked. No pictures it was disgusting. Now it's all I can smell. Drain outlet was higher than the dishwasher hose so the hose filled with all the muck and grease.

Off home to do the admin now.

Last job on a Friday. A Bosch washing machine that wasn't draining. The filter plug was also stuck and the customer unable to open it.

Luckily we could go in from the bottom. Drained the machine with the trusty wet vac and got the sump hose off to find a bra pad sitting right over the drain hole. I also found a big metal tag stuck in the filter. This customer was really lucky the metal tag didn't pierce a hole in the seal or hoses.

First call today was an oven that was just getting hotter and hotter. The thermostat wasn't kicking in and turning the element off when it got to temperature.

Replacement thermostat fitted and it's back to doing what it should.

This big Bosch double oven had a couple of problems. The lower oven wasn't reaching temperature and the fan motor was working intermittently.

My spine is very thankful it was fitted to the exact same height as my work bench. These things weigh a tonne!

In todays episode of what not to wash in your washing machine we have cuddly dog toys. Customer washed a rug and some dog toys that had been ripped by the pampered pooches. The sump hose was chock full of stuffing. They'd already cleaned out the filter but it still wasn't draining.

There seems to be lots of Hotpoint machines at the moment.

This tumble dryer was showing the water container full light even when empty. In this case the pump has failed. Replacement pump fitted and it's back up and running just as the thunderstorms hit this afternoon. I got soaked going back to the van.

I thought I was being a good boy and hung some washing out at home this morning between jobs. It's now in the tumble dryer totally defeating the point of hanging it out.

This tumble dryer wasn't tumbling.

It is now tumbling again, just in time for the rainy season. A bad capacitor was the fault. In a tumble dryer the capacitor provides extra charge to get the motor going at the start of a cycle. On most models they're really easy to change. Candy in their infinite wisdom puts them below the drum. A right pain in the bottom as the drum needs to come out.

This customer couldn't remove the filter plug from their machine. They also reported the machine smelling stale.

I got the filter plug out and removed a small pile of hair bands and junk. If one of these bands gets round the drain pump it can cause it to fail.

Washing machines smell for a variety of reasons. The best way to deal with it is to run a cleaner through, you might need to do it more than once.

Once clean leave the door ajar when not in use, regularly run hotter washes, every so often run a service wash (90 degrees, no clothes or detergent) and use powder or liquid at the manufacturers recommended amount. That should prevent smells and keep your machine performing well.

A morning call to a Miele dishwasher that's wasn't draining. Cleared a blockage from the pipe and gave the customer some cleaner to run through.

The head of fiscal responsibility was very unhappy about the state of the van. He came out to inspect it between going through spreadsheets and budgetary forecasts. He says I need to work harder, apparently his tuna budget is "below expectations"

This customer reported the bottom oven was no longer heating on this Hotpoint cooker.

Found not only a faulty fan element but the fan motor had seized as well. Attended Friday with just an element and came back today to replace the fan motor.

This customer actually called about a blocked drain hose which we cleared on the first appointment. When running a function test we found the machine was noisy and leaking from the front. The customer had repaired the door seal themselves and done a good job, though I wouldn't recommend repairing door seals with super glue.

The noise was caused by a worn pulley. The pulleys on most machines are plastic and they wear round the socket. The Electrolux range are particularly prone to this.

Motors for this Miele vacuum are no longer available, the customer reported poor suction and asked us to take a look.

The bag had been fitted wrong and instead of going into the bag most of the muck was ending up in and around the motor. It was full of cat hair and fluff. All cleaned out, filters replaced and bag fitted properly and we've saved this vacuum from the tip.

Door seal change on this cracking Bosch washing machine. The old one had a nick in the seal and was slowly leaking. It was dripping on to the fixing clamp and had corroded through the spring. Really shocked that it hadn't caused a major flood.
